School Announcement:

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement February 10, 2012

Dear Parents and Teachers,

February seems to be a quiet month, since the Spring Festival is over and the next holiday is a few months away. That leaves us with nothing much to entertain us, except to concentrate on school work, so the following are what I want to remind you of for this coming Sunday.

 (1) The Chinese SAT II Mock Test application has been submitted to the test center. This year, we have 33 students applying for the test. That’s quite a crowd, and I wish them good luck.  I have been coordinating the Chinese SAT II Mock Test since 2005 and have collected some test materials. If any teacher/parent needs review materials, feel free to let me know. I will be more than happy to hand them out. Although the school covers the test fee, students need to pay a $10 deposit which will be refunded if they show up to the exam on that day. The SAT II Mock Test is scheduled for Sunday, March 11 between 1:45PM to 3:15PM.  We encourage all students of 8th grade and above to participate in this test because it is a good assessment of Chinese learning.

(2) The submission deadline for the International Chinese Essay contest is March 1st and we need to get the essays ready by February 12.  Teachers Xiaobo Ren and Lily Lee are coordinating this event and we have asked language teachers of 5th grade and above to give writing assignments in class. If your kid didn’t get a writing assignment, please check with the room teacher. We encourage parents to get involved and students to participate.

 (3) Every Sunday, we display student essays on the display boards in the cafeteria. I encourage parents to read their essays and encourage your kids to participate.

 (4) Two culture classes will be cancelled, effective this coming Sunday due to teachers’ family commitment. They are Children’s Choir taught by Mr. Justin Cook, and Dance-4 taught by Madame Chunyuan Zhang. Students in these two classes are encouraged to go to other culture classes. If you cannot find an appropriate class, please come to fill out a class withdraw form to get tuition refund.

 (5) The Chinese Book Fair is scheduled for Sunday, February 26th between noon and 4:00 PM at the school cafeteria. We have negotiated a deal with Timesbook.com to get 10% from the book sales. This is a big deal for us, and we encourage all parents to come to the fair and show your generosity by supporting your kids and your school. Let’s make this a school fundraising event. Timesbook.com also agreed to bring in more books and multimedia products to the fair.

 (6) Finally, spring is the recruiting season for the next year. We are a community-based school that needs direct involvement from parents. It is your commitment and active participation that makes our school strong. Next year, we are looking for more parents to serve on the School PTA team, School Administration Team, and of course to become teachers. If you are interested in working for the school, please stop by at my corner. It’s a lot of fun to work in school because you get to know lots of people and make yourself “popular”, seriously.

So much for this week’s business.

Thank you all for your attention and see you on Sunday.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement February 3, 2012

Dear Parents and Teachers,

The question I posted in last week's news letter (In which battle did Napoleon die? ) generated quite a few interesting comments. One reader asked me about the relevance of Napoleon’s death to Chinese Learning and another reader challenged the answer to this question (answer: * his last battle ). Most readers asked me if I will post another question in this week’s newsletter, and perhaps make it a tradition for future news releases. Posting a question can be a daunting task but now that I have opened up the Pandora’s box, I feel obliged to do it again, at least for this week. So here are the questions:

 (1)     Why are smart people usually ugly?

(2)     Why do athletes never sneeze?

I must confess these questions are weird, so let’s get down to our weekly business now and leave the answers to the very end.

 (1) The Chinese SAT II Mock Test application is due this Sunday. For teachers of 8th grade and above, please submit your student names, in both English and Chinese, to vice principal Aiping Chen. The school will cover the test fee but students need to pay a $10 deposit which will be refunded on the date of the exam, if they show up to the exam. The SAT II Mock Test is scheduled on Sunday, March 11 between 1:45PM to 3:15PM. For parents who are unfamiliar with this test, please read the attached manual.

 (3) A kind reminder to all teachers and room parents that we need to keep each classroom clean and not to leave personal belongings in the classroom when you leave. As a rule, food and drinks are not allowed in the classroom. If you do and the custodians forget to collect them, I will be contacted by the Shaker Junior High with an unpleasant tone.

 (4) To appreciate all the contributions and hard work from volunteers at the Spring Festival Show held at the Egg, the CCC executive team would like to invite all volunteers, performers, and board members for a pot-luck party at the CCC building. Please bring your favorite food and join the crowd. For details, see the attached flyer.

More details will come out next week, so stay tuned.

 (6) The 2012 Health Fair sponsored by the CCC and the Chinese American Medical Society (CAMS) will be held on Sunday, March 11. This will be the third year we’ve organized this event, with the past two years being very successful. Lee-Hua Miao, the program coordinator, informed me that the Shaker Junior High will publish news about our 2012 Health Fair in their upcoming school newsletter, which has a broad distribution, including Shaker students, school parents, and school staff. Dr. Mina Sun is busy preparing fliers and designing many programs with local doctors. Please pass the information around, especially to your friends who have visiting elderly and anyone who does not speak English.  More information will come.

So much for this week’s business. Before you delete this email, let’s deal with the two questions I posted.

Q1: Why are smart people usually ugly?

Q2: Why do athletes never sneeze?

The answers are:

Q1: They are not; and

Q2: They do.

It’s a false premise, my friend.

Thank you all for your attention and see you on Sunday.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement January 27, 2012

Dear Parents and Teachers,

Once in a while, my daughter likes to email me a random question, either to challenge my intelligence or to test my knowledge. AlIow me to share the latest question with you.

This week’s question is: In which battle did Napoleon die?

Before you dig into a history textbook, let’s go over a few items pertaining to the Chinese School.

 (1) The International Chinese Essay contest is coming. The submission deadline is March 1st and we need to get the essays ready by February 12. Last year, teachers Xiaobo Ren and Lily Lee coordinated this event and 14 of our students were awarded for their work. This year they are again volunteering and I bet we will have more award-winning essays. The school therefore asks language teachers to give some writing assignments in class. We also ask parents to get involved and students to participate. Information about the essay contest is attached.

 (2) The Chinese SAT II Mock Test application is due on the first week of February. For teachers of 8th grade and above, please submit student names to vice principal Aiping Chen. We encourage all students to participate in this test because it is a good assessment of student Chinese learning.

 (3) There will be a school council meeting this coming Sunday during the third period. If you need to talk to the school administration staff, please do so between 1:00pm and 3:00pm, or after 4:20pm if you choose to stay late.

 (4) If you are interested in sending your kids to China for a summer camp, please see the attached information from the Center for Chinese Education Services.

 (5) I am in the process of arranging a Chinese Book Fair with Timesbook.com. It will be scheduled on Sunday, February 26th at Shaker Junior High. We have been holding this event since 2008. The feedback is mixed, but at least it gives us an opportunity to talk directly to the seller. If you have questions/ suggestions/requests, please email me and I will be glad to forward your requests to the Timesbook.

That’s all I can think of for the coming Sunday.

Now, back to the question: In which battle did Napoleon die?

The answer is:  * his last battle

Thank you all for your attention and see you on Sunday.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement January 20, 2012

Dear Parents and Teachers,

As we are all aware, January is quite a stressful month, and so are February, March, April, and May until the Chinese School is over. But it can be excitingly stressful or stressfully exciting, depending on how you read my message.  Here is a summary for the coming weekend.

Things that are stressfully exciting:

(1) Saturday, January 21 is a big day for all of us. The Dragon is coming and we will all celebrate its arrival at the Egg. This is our New Year, our culture extravaganza, a day on which we gather together as a community. This is the event through which our kids learn what Chinese New Year is about, and what it means to be Chinese. The show will be great, a good display of local talents, but this is not all that we’ll do there. This is the day on which we share each other’s joy, celebrate a tradition, and most importantly, integrate ourselves with a larger crowd, a crowd of one root, a crowd that creates RenQi (human energy).

 (2) The Chinese school will have a small display in the lobby with a few copies of yearbooks and handbooks. If anyone you know is interested in taking Chinese classes, please help us pass the word around.

 (3) We have also prepared red envelopes (Hongbao) which will be distributed to all children at the end of the show. Our school treasurer, Jun Zhao, has them all ready, so please be nice to her on that day and moving forward (after all, she controls the money, and that is what counts). However, your kids have to stay until the end of the show to receive a Hongbao. By giving out Hongbao, we intend to send two financial messages to our kids: (1) that the Chinese New Year celebration is financially rewarding, and it is what "Gong Xi Fa Cai" means; and (2) that money doesn't come easy, and that patience and endurance pay off.

 (4) On Sunday, January 22nd, we will distribute a present to each student. This time, the Hongbao will contain something sweet and we are 101% confident our children will like it. My special thanks to Xiaoqing Zhang, Ning Zhu (from PTA) and Jianzhong Tang who volunteered to shop around for presents. Xiaoqing finally got the deal from the company. It's now in the hands of Dong Gang, our vice principal. He is a good VP, always making sure we have something in school, be it candy, textbooks, copy papers, etcetera, etcetera, and etcetera.

 (5) The school PTA and my comrades will arrange the gifts, so I ask all language teachers to come to my table on Sunday to pick up your students' presents.

 (6) Let us also not forget our teachers, who have done such a tremendous amount of work for our students, and this is the season we thank them for their contribution and dedication. A symbolic present is also prepared for each teacher, sponsored by the Asian Food Market.

Things that are excitingly stressful:

(7) The International Chinese Essay contest is coming. The submission deadline is March 1st and we need to get them ready by February 12. It is exciting to get your kids involved in writing, especially in Chinese. You can never predict the outcome of their writing. There can be very bright ideas and very interesting lines. Information about the essay contest is attached.

 (8) The Chinese SAT II Mock Test application is due on the first week of February. For teachers of 8th grade and above, please submit student names to vice principal Aiping Chen. We encourage all students to participate in this test because it is a good assessment of student Chinese learning.

 (9) The Math Counts Class is cancelled this Sunday, in observation of Chinese New Year. (Seriously, who does math on holiday? Not even Wall Street.)

A Final Note:

My daughter and I watched a movie together, which doesn’t happen very often since she is in college. It’s called "War Horse", and directed by Spielberg. This is a fantastic movie, with a great story, great photography, and great music (by John Williams). An interesting dialogue between a British soldier and a German soldier while they worked on saving the horse caught my attention. Remember, they were enemies on the battlefield. Here are the two lines:

British Soldier: "You speak good English."

German Soldier: "I speak English well."

My question is: How do you translate them into Chinese?

Thank you all for your attention and have a Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

                Principal, Chinese School (2011-2012)

Dear Parents and Teachers,

Welcome back!

I hope all of you enjoyed the time with your family and friends over the holiday season. As I am sure a few of you put “learning Chinese”  as your New Year’s resolution, allow me to share with you some things the school and the Chinese Community Center have been doing over the past two weeks.

 (1) The CCC team is busy preparing for the Chinese New Year Show to be held at the Egg on January 21st. Tickets will be sold at the Chinese School this coming Sunday. Note that this is the last day tickets will be sold at the school (there will be no school on January 15th). We encourage you to come to the New Year Show. After all, this is our New Year, our culture extravaganza, a day on which we gather together as a community. This is the event through which our kids learn what the Chinese New Year is about, and what it means to be Chinese. The show will be great, a good display of local talents, but this is not all that we do there. This is the day on which we share each other’s joy, celebrate a tradition, and most importantly, integrate ourselves with a larger crowd, a crowd of one root, a crowd that creates RenQi (human energy). For that reason, we should all go, and it will be noisy, crowded, and after all, fun.

For detailed information, please visit the CCC website at http://www.cccalbany.org/CCCCMS/node/642

(2) The Chinese school has 5 performances in the show. We extend our congratulations to all of them, especially to our two pre-school dance teachers and their students. Their performances at the Chinese School holiday celebration were outstanding. We are very fortunate to have them.

 (3) Let us also not forget that a small red envelope (Hongbao) will be distributed to kids at the end of the show.

(4)The school resumes session this coming Sunday, January 8th. For those parents who cannot attend the Spring semester due to family relocation, please come and fill out a withdrawal form so that we can take care of your refund quickly.

 (5) The albanychineseschool.org domain name is back and I am now able to receive email from you folks. My special thanks to Mr. Ming Ding, our beloved school principal from a decade ago. Mr. Ding served two terms as school principal and many of us old-timers have fond memories of him, especially his good sense of humor.

 (6) As you all know, the school rental fee for the year 2011-2012 is $21,500. This is quite a significant expense. As I prepare for the next year’s negotiation with Shaker Junior High, I am looking for any parents who can do networking (LaGuan Xi) or who has negotiation talents which will help me with this complicated process. If you have the charisma and communication skills, please step forward and the school will appreciate your help. Last December, Xiaoqing and I spent an afternoon with the Shaker staff and her communication skills really made a difference (the preparation work done by the Shaker Junior High on December 18th was quite satisfactory).

 (7) The school has a writing corner where a few presentation boards were presented every week (hope you noticed that). Our vice principal Dong Gang is very diligent at collecting student essays. We continuously encourage all students to participate in this writing practice.

Many other things will come out as we proceed, but for now, stick to your New Year’s resolution and I will see you on Sunday.

Thank you all for your attention.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

               Principal, Chinese School (2011-2012)

Dear Parents and Teachers,

This coming Sunday, December 18th, is going to be a good day for the school and here are the 3 very important reasons: first, it ends with EIGHT which is a good number in Chinese; second, it marks the end of the Fall semester so that we can all take a break to enjoy the holiday season; and third (most importantly), we have two very handsome young teachers who are going to get married this Sunday. Mr. Tengyao Song is a Ph.D student at Albany Medical Center College and Miss Quan Chen is a Ph.D student at  UAlbany. Please join me in extending our warmest congratulations to them and let us all wish them “Bai Tou Dao Lao” . With that said, let’s get down to the last day’s business.

(1)The school holds double sessions on December 18th, so class will start at 10:00am and end at 11:50am. Our holiday party and program presentation will start at 1:30pm. Potluck lunch is from 12:00pm to 1:00pm in the school  cafeteria, organized by your room parent.

(2)Many classes have submitted programs for the school celebration. To give everyone a chance to perform onstage, and to encourage students to learn from and support each other, we ask you to stay in the school if your kids finish their performances, to support friends from other classes.

(3)Parking at Shaker Junior High can be challenging. If you cannot find a parking spot, please park your car at Shaker Senior High. Do not park your car in the fire lane. Occasionally, North Colonie Police patrols the school and will offer you a costly traffic ticket. Last year, one car happened to park on the sidewalk and was spotted by the principal of Shaker Junior High. I wonder if you still remember how Jianzhong Tang raised her voice to “high high   to get your attention.

(4)During the morning session, the school PTA will be busy decorating the auditorium stage. If you don’t have much to do, please stop by the auditorium and offer them a hand. We are also asking a few parents to kindly stay late and help us to clean up the auditorium. It is understandable that everyone needs to get out soon. But this is your school, and this is our school. Your participation makes a difference.

(5)As a school tradition, we ask each room PTA to prepare a card with students’ signatures and collect a gift (in any form, i.e. a gift card) for your room teacher. Our teachers have been working very hard throughout the school year, and this is the season in which we express our gratitude to them. We will start our celebration with a short “Thank you Teacher” ritual, which calls for all teachers to come to the stage. Each class should have at least one student representative, who will go to the stage to present the teacher with a small gift along with a flower (we will hand out flowers to you). Make sure your class has at least one student there.

(6)During the ceremony, the CCC Youth Volunteer Team members will help us to keep the stage and auditorium in good order. These are our high school students volunteering their hours. Please follow their instructions and directions.

(7)An early warning: with so many people participating in the potluck lunch on December 18th, space in the cafeteria is always an issue. You may find the table assigned to your class is too small, or you may not find the table assigned to your class. This happens every year, and when it happens again this year, please be patient; ask around and you will find your destination.

(8)The school is also looking for a few parents who have some medical background to serve as a “school nurse”. My wife used to be one for two years. Given the amount of people packed into the auditorium, safety is always important. If you have a medical background or know someone who works in medical field, please step forward or help us find one.

Finally, Chinese New Year is around the corner. This year, the CCC New Year Celebration will be held at the Egg on Saturday, January 21st. Tickets will be sold at the school this coming Sunday. Please stop by. As we say goodbye to the year of the Hare, we are embracing an important new year, the Year of the Dragon. In planning for the New Year celebration, the school prepares a small “Hong Bao  for each student at the Egg. So make sure you get a ticket and show up there.

Our special thanks to Dr. Karen Tan and her family who donated $1,000 to the Chinese school on December 4th. The donation will be used to fund student activities, including the holiday celebration.

Thank you all for your attention.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

                Principal, Chinese School (2011-2012)

Dear Parents and Teachers,

If I understand correctly, we are all counting down the number of days left before classes end on December 18th. This is the most exciting and the busiest time of the year; you are all busy preparing for the last day of school show, and of course studying for final exams, which you can’t avoid unless the teacher gives you an easy time. Allow me to remind you of a few things on December 10th.

(1)Many classes have submitted programs for the school celebration on December 18th. To give everyone a chance to perform onstage, and to encourage students to learn from and support each other, we ask you to limit each program to within 5 minutes. Dance and chorus are exceptions. We also ask you to stay in the school if your kids finish their performances, to support friends from other classes.

(2)December 18th is the last day of school for the Fall semester. For those of you who are new to the school, please note that the school holds double sessions on that day. Class starts at 10:00am and ends at 11:50am. Holiday party and program presentation starts at 1:30pm. There will be a potluck lunch in the school cafeteria, organized by your room parent from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. To help the school PTA arrange tables, each room parent should inform Xiaoqing Zhang, our school PTA chair, or her team members as soon as possible so that the school PTA team can make table arrangements (I think most classes have done this).

(3)Many thanks to our school photographers, Peizhen Xu, Chongguang Zhang and Ning Zhu, we have recorded all class activities on November 20th. Peizhen has single-handedly pushed the button and magically transferred your lovely images (including mine which aren’t perfect) to our school photo gallery at  http://www.flickr.com/photos/ccc_albany/sets/72157628295205731/

Find your kids in the gallery and see if they behaved well in class. For teachers who missed class on November 20th, please let us know so that we can take a picture for you this coming Sunday.

(4)As a school tradition, we ask each room PTA to prepare a card with students’ signatures and collect a gift (in any form, i.e. a gift card) for your room teacher. Our teachers have been working very hard throughout the school year, and this is the season in which we express our gratitude to them. If you are new to the school this year, please ask Xiaoqing Zhang, or any school PTA members. They have plenty of good ideas.

(5)The director of the CCC Chinese New Year celebration committee is looking for 12 boys, ages 12 to 14, to participate in the traditional Chinese “Dragon Dance  at the Egg during the Chinese New Year Celebration. I have asked Laura Tang, our CCC Youth Volunteer Team co-president to reach out to upper classes. If your kid fits this age profile, please contact her at tang.laura@gmail.com.

Finally, an early warning: with so many people participating in the potluck lunch on December 18th, space in the cafeteria is always an issue. You may find the table assigned to your class is too small, or you may not find the table assigned to your class. This happens every year, and when it happens again this year, I want you to first keep up the good holiday spirit, and then think of the problem in two ways: (A), the School PTA is usually right, which means the table is there, so just ask and look around; and (B), a small table may not be sufficient for your class, but it helps to keep the RenQi (human energy) cluster around. Isn’t that a perfect holiday arrangement?

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

               Principal, Chinese School (2011-2012)

Dear Parents and Teachers,

Hope this email finds that all of you had a great Thanksgiving. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday behind us, we have three more weeks to go, including the holiday celebration weekend (December 18th). So here are a few things we need to do:

(1)The scholarship committee, headed by vice Principal Jing Zhang, was formed on November 20th.  The committee includes two teachers and two school PTAs. They will review student applications this coming Sunday, and we wish all applicants good luck. If your kids are interested in applying for the scholarship next year, please pay attention to the application procedures and requirements published at www.albanychineseschool.org.

 (2) Congratulation to all students who participated and won prizes in the Story-Telling contest! We will visit your classes this Sunday and present you with a certificate and a small gift in recognition of your outstanding performance. We would also like to thank the three photographers, Chongguang Zhang, Tengyao Song, and Lin Xiao, as well as Peizhen Xu for her editing and publishing. You can now view and download these pictures at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ccc_albany/sets/72157628084780849/

(3)Teachers of 5th grade or lower, please submit your class programs to Jing Zhang at jingzhang537@gmail.com by this coming Sunday, December 4th.  Our teacher and student volunteers need some time to prepare the slide show, program menu, and scripts for the School Holiday Celebration. Also, to give everyone a chance to perform on the stage, and to encourage students to learn from and support each other, we ask you to limit each program to within 5 minutes. Dance and chorus are exceptions.

(4)December 18th is the last day of school for the Fall semester. To help the school PTA arrange tables, each room parent should inform Xiaoqing Zhang, our school PTA chair, or her team members as soon as possible so that the school PTA team can make table arrangements. The school PTA team, including Jinghua Zhu, Ning Zhu, Kangguo Cheng, Tao Qian and Zhong Li, has done so much for the school; therefore, I ask all parents to please stop by their corner (adjacent to the copy machines) and say thank you for their volunteer work and also offer to help in some way. The more people get involved, the better we are as a community.

Let’s look forward to an exciting end-of-semester celebration!

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

               Principal, Chinese School (2011-2012)

Dear Parents and Teachers,

 (1) This Sunday, November 20th, is school picture day. We will have 4  photographers walking around the school and visiting your classrooms for a few professional shots. Please bring your smiley face to class.

 (2) Master Lucas Geller from Wushu class is out of town this week and will be back this coming Sunday. The class is still on schedule unless the flight gets delayed. If this happens, you will be notified. Stay tuned.

 (3) Teachers of 5th grade or lower, it is time to start planning for the traditional holiday celebration on the last day of the Fall semester (December 18). Please begin organizing your class presentations. After Thanksgiving, our school administrators will approach you asking for your class presentations. To give everyone a chance to perform on the stage, we ask you to limit each program to within 5 minutes. Dance and chorus are exceptions.

 (4) The Chinese School Scholarship application is due on November 20th. If your child is in 10th grade at a local school and plans to graduate from the Chinese School in the Spring of 2012, please ask him/her to submit the application package (application essay and all supporting documents) by this coming Sunday. Application procedures and requirements are published in the school handbook, which can be downloaded at www.albanychineseschool.org

(5) The Golden Dragon Acrobats are coming to Albany for a show at the Egg Theater on Sunday, November 27. The ticket price at the Box Office is $22 but CCC members get a discounted price of $13. The CCC will sell tickets in the school cafeteria. Please share the news.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement November. 11, 2011

Dear Parents and Teachers,

 (1) We had a huge turnout at the Chinese School Story Telling Contest last Sunday, November 6th at the CCC building. Over one hundred students from preschool to 5th grade participated in the contest. When the contest started (around 1:00pm), the CCC building was packed with over 150 people, well beyond the building capacity. Both parents and students were enthusiastic about the event. The programs they presented clearly demonstrated their enthusiasm, careful preparation and strong commitment.

I would like to thank many of the volunteers whose dedication and commitment made this event possible:

 (A) All the teachers who helped students prepare for the event also showed up at the contest. They provided strong support and directed their students' performances. These commendable teachers were: Jing Feng, Hui Gao, Baozhen Huang, Zhenwen Liu, Fang Li, Hongyue Sun, Ling Xiao, Jinzhe Feng, Yadan Chu, Zhimei Ding, and Wenyi Zhai (If I missed anyone, please let me know).

 (B) The dedicated judges, Fangbing Li (teacher), Quan Chen (teacher), Jinghua Zhu (parent), and Yingjun Dang (parent), sat through the entire 3 hours, evaluating student presentations.

 (C) Photographors Tengyao Song, Lin Xiao and Chongguang Zhang walked many miles (in the building) in order to get perfect shots. Their work made this event memorable.

 (D) Other people provided logistic support for this event, including Jin Liu who helped purchase gifts, Wei Zhang who distributed presents, Ling Xiao's husband who helped purchase ice cream, Xiaoqing Zhang who organized parents on duty, and Jinghua Zhu (PTA) who stayed late just to make sure the building was clean and in good order.

 (E) Special thanks to my two dedicated colleagues, vice principals Aiping Chen and Gang Dong. Aiping served as the chief judge and spent many hours after the contest to compute the final score for each student. Gang Dong was the architect of this event. Mr. Dong spent lots of time planning the event, coordinating with teachers on their programs, working with Mingming Xia on the audio system, anchoring the contest by standing at the podium for over three hours, and cleaning after the event.

Dear parents,

We are halfway through the Fall semester and I hope you are all having a good  time in the Chinese School.

A couple of things to remind you of:

 (1) A few classes are celebrating Halloween on Sunday and we hope your kids will have a good time. Just be careful when distributing candies because some kids may be allergic to peanuts.

(2)The Chinese School Annual Chinese Story Telling Contest will be held next Sunday, November 6th at the CCC building. Classes of 5th grade or below should submit up to 5 stories for the contest. We encourage your kids to participate and take this opportunity to show their talents. (3)Once we finish celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. This means we shall start planning for the traditional holiday celebration on the last day of school (December 18). It's about time to start working with your teacher to come up with a program to present in front of the school. More announcements will come in November.

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement October. 6, 2011

Dear Parents and teachers,

 (1) With the gradual changes in leaf color and falling temperatures, it is well justified to take a small break from the Chinese School. So, according to the school calendar, we don't have school this coming Sunday, October 9. Go hiking if you can. It's one of the few weekends we'll see any sun.

 (2) We noticed some students running in the hallways during the break. Please remind your kids not to run inside the building. You are ultimately responsible for the safety of your children in school.

 (3) A few teachers reported that some parents prefer to sit in the classroom along with their child. We kindly remind all parents to obtain permission from the teachers before sitting in the classroom. Also, try to keep the hallways quiet during class. For school rules and parent responsibilities, please read the handbook at http://albanychineseschool.org/

(4) CCC membership refunds will start on October 16. The CCC bookkeeper should be in the cafeteria processing refunds. This is also a good time to get a CCC membership card which allows you to get a 10% discount at local Chinese restaurants.

 (5) The Chinese School will organize the Annual Chinese Story-Telling Contest held on Sunday, November 6. A separate notice will be sent out. Please contact your teacher if your kids are interested in participating.

 (6) I will be out of town during the week of October 16. During my absence, Mr. Gang Dong will be in charge. For those of you who are new to the school, Mr. Dong is the vice principal who sells books to you at a discount. He is also in charge of all school activities.

He can be reached at donggang36@gmail.com.

Have a good weekend,

Sincerely,

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement October. 1, 2011

Dear Parents and Teachers,

(1) Last Sunday (09/25/2011), the CCC Youth Volunteer Team held its first meeting for the 2011-2012 school year. Laura Tang and Gigi Yeung were elected as co-presidents. Michelle Xiong and Hannah Liu were elected as vice presidents. Ryan Guo will serve as secretary. 18 students attended the meeting. The Team will assist the school and the CCC in organizing several events, including (but not limited to), the School Holiday Celebration Party, Chinese New Year Show, Regional Food Bank, and School Field Day. Students who are interested in joining the Team but didn't attend this meeting, please contact Laura Tang at tang.laura@gmail.com.

 (2) Despite all the efforts we made, we were unable to keep all classrooms and hallways clean. Some students left food/drinks in the hallways and classrooms. After meeting with the school PTA, we decided that starting on October 16, each class will not make snack arrangements during the break. The following classes will be affected: XQ-1, XQ-2, XQ-3, CFL-C1, CFL-C2, CFL-C3, JTJMP1-1, JTJMP1-2, JTJMP1-3, JTJMP2-1, JTJMP2-3. I will inform room teachers this weekend. Also teachers should remind students not to bring food/drinks to the classroom.

 (3) All teachers please come to the front desk this coming Sunday to obtain a hard copy of your class roster. Students who are not on the list are advised to go to their own classrooms.

 (4) CCC membership refunds will start in the second week of October. Currently the CCC treasurer and bookkeeper are working hard on tax returns which will end by the first week of October. They have a report of your contribution to the CCC and if your name is on their list, a refund check will be issued to you.

Thank you for your attention

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

               Principal, Chinese School (2011-2012)

Dear Parents and Teachers,

We are moving on to the third week and most students have started working on their homework and projects.

There are a couple things I would like to share with you:

 (1) Online registration will end this coming Friday, September 23. If you need to add/transfer/drop a class online, please do so before Friday. After Friday, we will freeze the system and any new change requests will go through the registration administration.

 (2) According to class rosters, student enrollment in some classes is not well balanced.  If a class has reached maximum capacity, and you are new to the class, we advice you to move to a class with fewer students. A good teacher-student ratio creates an ideal environment for learning.

 (3) All teachers, please go to online registration to print out your class list of students. The trial period is over so students who are not on your list are advised to go to their own classroom.

 (4) A few classes may soon be cancelled due to low enrollment. We will post cancellation notices on our websites at http://dreamschool.com/albany

 and http://albanychineseschool.org.

(5) All teachers, please keep the classrooms clean and in good order:

Shaker Junior High called me on Monday, complaining about our students bringing food and drink to the classrooms. This is the second incident since school started and we are only in Week Two. After discusssing with the PTA, the school asks each teacher and room parent to be responsible for the good order of their classroom. The administration is taking the following actions: during the first period, PTA on duty will distribute a plastic bag to your classroom. Either your room parent or you will ensure all garbage goes into the bag and take it out of the classroom. Of course, the easiest way to keep the classroom clean is to tell your students not to bring food into the room.

 (6) The CCC Youth Volunteer Team will start their first meeting this coming Sunday. This year, Laura Tang, Gigi Yeung and Thomas Li will coordinate the first meeting. If you are in grade 8 or above, please come and join the team. A separate announcement will be made soon.

 (7) CCC membership refund will start in the second week of October. Currently the CCC treasurer and bookkeeper are working hard on tax return which will end by the end of September. They have a report of your contribution to the CCC and if your name is on their list, a refund check will be issued to you.

So far, we have 359 students attending 51 courses. Enrollment keeps growing and growing. This is a good sign, as the Chinese saying goes "Ren Ding Xin Wang". So, let's keep the momentum going.

Thank you for your attention

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei

Dear Fellow Teachers,

Our school time on Sundays is short, exciting, and sometimes chaotic, which prevents me from talking to each of you in person. Since we have to live with it, I want to use the email system to keep communication open and keep you all up-to-date on school issues relevant to you. Be it good news or bad news, exciting topics or mundane routines, I am  obliged to share them with you and hope you bear with me with some patience.

This is our first week of school. We just started, so both good news and bad news are yet to come. For those of you who work in IT, like me, we all like the saying, “ no news is good news -- Ping An Wu Shi”.

That said, I want to bring up one topic in this email, and that is the copy machines. This is an issue which has been haunting me for over 11 years, ever since I started my Chinese School adventure as a PTA.  Back then in the year of 2000, we used one, and only one textbook series, called Standard Chinese (1-9) , sponsored by the Ministry of Education . There were two main characters in the book. They were David and Xiaoyun (Little Cloud), and all topics relating to Chinese culture were presented through their conversations. Simple enough, right? Well, here is the problem: conversation is boring, and having kids spending 2 hours repeating a conversation is almost insane. Therefore, all teachers came up with different ideas on teaching, all of which led to some words or pictures on a piece of paper. And guess what, every Sunday these papers got reproduced.

It was always a very, very long waiting line at the copy machine table. I actually did a calculation. On average, a teacher would copy 3 pages per student. Given the enrollment of 200 students, it translated into 600 pages. Our poor copy machines, they were under-powered and were not designed for mass production. So they collapsed, and died a heroic death, for the purpose of education . During my two years as vice principal, I replaced 3 copy machines, numerous toners and a hundred pounds of paper (estimated), and got promoted to “Staples Premier Customer.

That was then. Many things have happened in the last 11 years. The most noticeable one is the technology and the amount of resources available for learning Chinese. We no longer depend on PC’s or Laptops because smart phones can handle many cool applications. We no longer rely on textbooks for learning Chinese because many web applications are more creative in generating teaching contents. The story of “ Monkey King”  can be taught not just through textbooks, but in cartoons, movies, Facebook, Twitter, QQ, podcast, online games, etcetera, etcetera, and etcetera.

So, what is my point? My point is to ask you to explore alternative ways, (use a different device) to distribute teaching content/materials, instead of relying on a copy machine. Our copy machines are old and fragile, and take a longer time to make copies. Imagine if every one of you wanted to print 2 pages for each student, a slight reduction from 11 years ago, then 600 pages will take 1 hour for two copies to be produced, assuming 10 seconds per page.

I am not trying to be environmentally friendly, although it is cool to be that way, but I am advocating saving some and being creative by using alternative technologies. Another solution is to distribute teaching materials in pdf files to students.

PTA and parents on duty are working hard to produce your materials. Let’s salute to their work.

That’s the end of my Blah, blah, blah.

Thank you for your attention and see you on Sunday.

Your very friendly Principal,

               Guoping Fei

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement September. 15, 2011
  • The Children's Choir of Chinese School was established in September, 2010. The first director was Professor Yiping Wu. The number of participants increased quickly from 12 to more than twenty, so that the class had to be divided into two sections. The choir not only performed at the Chinese School, but also at CCC Spring Festival, a musical show at the Proctor's Theater, and the annual concert of CCC Chorus. The students not only learned quite a few Chinese and American choral pieces, understood some singing techniques, but began to realize the importance of team work. This year, the director is Mr. Justin Cook, a former student of Professor Wu. Mr. Cook graduated from famous Westminster Choir College in New Jersey. While at Westminster College, Mr. Cook was an assistant instructor of the well-known American Boy's Choir, and gained good experience on how to teaching children singing. His teaching will bring a fresh air to the Children's Choir. Professor Wu will continue to help growth of the choir, especially in learning Chinese repertoire.
  • Math club is holding two "fun math" sessions at Chinese School, from 3-4PM.

One session is for 1 & 2 grade students using classroom C204. Another session is for 4th, 5th and 6th graders in classroom C102.

The purpose of the Fun Math class is to challenge young kids beyond the

classroom setting. Good problems can inspire curiosity about number

relationships and geometric properties. It is hoped that in accepting the

challenge of mathematical problem solving, our kids will be led to explore new

mathematical horizons. This will also help our 4 through 6 grades kids to prepare math competition once they hit middle school.

Dear parents,

We had a wonderful, busy, and very exciting first day of school. It’s good to see all of you returning back and welcome our new families joining the Chinese School community.  As of today, we have had 252 families registered for school with a total of 312 students. Thanks to teachers, PTA volunteers and administrative staff, we managed to arrange all students in classes and we hope they have a very productive year.  With that said, allow me to remind you of the following:

(1)If the class enrollment has reached maximum and you have not registered for that class, please go to a different class. An overcrowded classroom is not good for teaching and learning.

(2)Students must be supervised at all times in the classrooms.  They are not to touch anything in the classroom or erase anything on the boards.  Please do not move anything around in the classrooms.  We have had a few problems in the past and got complaints from the teachers at Shaker Junior High. That’s why we need to reiterate the importance of school rules and ask all students to observe these rules.

(3)Please do not park your car in the fire lane in front of the cafeteria. This is a safety issue and we want everyone to observe this rule.

(4)For those of you who are CCC members through donation( i.e. sefa, united way, individual donation), the school is working with the CCC to refund your money. We will inform you as soon as we are ready.

Thank you for your attention and see you next Sunday.

Sincerely,

Guoping Fei, on behalf of the school administrative team

  • CCC Chinese School Weekly Announcement Juny 14 , 2011

Dear Teachers,
Greetings!
While we are all enjoying summer vacation, I would like to inform you that Chinese School registration for the 2011-2012 school year is underway. This is the first time we will hold registration online, and we want to make it as efficient/accurate as possible.
To facilitate the registration process, I ask you to do the following:

(1) Each one of you has a user account in the school registration database. Your default login ID is your first name and your default password is the last 4 digits of your phone number. You can change it after you log in (make sure ID format is "User Login Name").
(2) Once you log in, please check your personal profile, i.e email address, home address, phone number, etc, etc. Please also give a brief discription of yourself so that potential students and parents know who you are.
(3) The school also asks each of you to fill out a course description and teaching plan. You may combine the two together. Generally, the school expects you to briefly describe your assigned course in 4 categories: 1.teaching objective, 2.teaching methodology, 3. textbook, 4. evaluation. For culture classes, a brief description is sufficient and teaching plan is not required.
(4) Please also contact the students and families in your class and ask them start online registration before August 6. So far, we have 49 students registered for next year and "250 unaccounted for". So your effort is critical and I thank thank you for helping the school reach out.
If you have any question regarding online registration, please feel free to contact me at 439-5056 or Jianhua Chen, school database administrator at jchen_9898@verizon.net, or Qiantao, former school vice principal at qian06@yahoo.com. We can certainly help you out, provided you have a pc and internet access.
(5) August 6 is CCC picnic day, and I encourage all of you to go there. The school will also set up a registration table. Please let your students and their families know.
(6) Mark your calendar! As a tradition, the school holds a teacher meeting in late August as final prep for the coming school year. This year we schedule the meeting at CCC buidling on Sunday, August 21, between 11:00am and 1:30pm. We will have one hour meeting (11:00am - 12:00pm), followed by a "business" lunch (12:00pm - 1:30pm).
Thank you all for your attention. This message is sent through school online registration system. If text format or message content looks funny, please let me know.
Enjoy your wonderful summer and hope to see you soon.
Sincerely,
Guoping Fei
